Security Challenges in San Luis Río Colorado

The security strategy in San Luis Río Colorado has failed since the withdrawal of the Unified Command, with a total of 61 homicides recorded so far this year. Seven of these murders took place in broad daylight on February 3, shocking the citizens.

The mayor of San Luis Río Colorado, Iván Sandoval, announced this morning: "command that does not work, goes away," expressing his dissatisfaction and questioning the coordination of those responsible for security in the municipality. Sandoval committed to ensuring that the leaders of the Municipal Police are individuals with experience and commitment to the citizenry.

The Attorney General of Justice of the State of Sonora reported the murder of seven people in the area of 48th Street and Quintana Roo, who were found bound hand and foot and ranged between 35 and 40 years of age. The security strategy had been implemented in San Luis Río Colorado in mid-last year by Governor Alfonso Durazo, in collaboration with authorities from the three levels of government due to the inability of municipal forces to contain criminal groups.

After a decrease in violence, security authorities withdrew from the area in December 2024, transferring responsibility for order back to preventive police. However, crime rates have not stopped, with murders, disappearances, confrontations, and threats to public officials becoming common in San Luis Río Colorado.

Among the groups vying for territory are 'Los Rusos,' linked to 'Los Mayitos' and 'Los Salazar,' as well as an independent cell operating in several areas of Sonora. Víctor Hugo Enriquez, Secretary of Public Security of the State of Sonora, has ruled out reinstating the Unified Command, despite press inquiries about this decision.

Currently, of the 1,500 National Guard elements deployed at the border between Sonora and the United States to combat the transit of fentanyl, immigrants, and violence generators, 400 are located in San Luis Río Colorado.
